Alexandre Georges has arrived in the port of Lampedusa at 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, September 13!
After setting out of Mahdia, Tunisia, and after four days paddling in the middle of the Mediterranean, the man has successfully vanquished his fears, his doubts and has completed the crossing so many men and women go on at the peril of their lives as “boat people”. On his sea kayak, with a GPS and a 13-meter escorting sailboat as his only assistance team, Alexandre has successfully completed his first long open sea crossing covering 73 nautical miles (135 kms). A crossing which, for many immigrants from Africa, represents the first stage of a long way to what they perceive as an El Dorado: Europe.
In a few days, Alexandre will give you the detail of his crossing on the Ocean71 website. A crossing which, for him, beyond the physical exploit, has a strong symbolical value. Alexandrer had been dreaming of this for months. Today, we are extremely happy to congratulate him for meeting this first challenge.
